Ralf Ragnick, United's Solution?

Date: 6 December 2021

Ralf Ragnick has recently been appointed as Manchester United's interim manager after the tenure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Fans have been complaining about the team's performance especially their defensive efforts as the Red Devils have not been defensively convincing. So I decided to have a look at Ralf's most recent season with RB Leipzig and whether his defensive record is something Manchester United can utilise.

RB Leipzig's Overall Record

Overall RB Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga in the 2018/2019 season. Although that might be the case, the team had the most clean sheets and the least conceded goals.

Pressing or Tackling/Interception?

This is where Ralf's men shine as they were successful in their pressing as well as managed to win the ball quite effectively. As seen in the scatter plot, RB Leipzig is in the upper right quadrant by itself indicating no team has worked as hard as RB Leipzig in winning the ball.

But Are They Winning the Ball at the Righ Place?

Digging deeper into the tackles and press, I looked where the team was winning the ball and whether they are winning on the right side of the pitch. The team was top two in both mid and attacking third which meant they started all their defensive efforts right from the top

Are They Giving Their Opponents a Hard Time?

Looking at the opponent's performance, they had a tough time even getting the ball in their attacking third and did not manage to get many shots. Combined with the team's unrelenting pressing, this would easily frustrate the opponent, and would not be able to play according to their game plan.

Conclusion

Ralf Ragnich has proven to be a great defensive coach based on his previous record but will he be able to help with Manchester United's defensive problems? Frankly, I believe it will not be an easy task as United has more off-the-pitch rather than on-the-pitch issues. Below is the live dashboard version which includes other analyses to indicate the team's defensive prowess. Feel free to go through them and leave any comments.
