Power BI Workshop/Challenge with UUM

Date: 20 August 2022

The Workshop

I was invited by UUM for a second time to conduct a workshop but this time on Power BI. I was both nervous and excited as I never conducted a Power BI workshop before. In my job, I have trained team members on using Power BI before from basically installing it to the point they can present their dashboard to the team.

This workshop is slightly different from my previous experience with UUM as this was part of a bigger event. The students were organising an event called “Accounting Competency Challenge” where students form their own groups to participate in five different tasks to mainly test their accounting knowledge and capability.

The workshop covered the following areas:

  1. Introduction to Power BI

    • What is Power BI?

    • Why do we use Power BI?

    • Power BI Overview

  2. Getting the Data Ready

    • How to load data

    • Data type

    • Transform data in Power Query

    • Creating data model

  3. Visualising the Data

    • Type of charts available

    • Creating visualisation

    • Formatting visualisation

  4. Making the Dashboard

    • Arranging visualisation

    • Filtering visualisation

  5. Sharing the Results

    • PDF

    • Power Point

    • Power BI Service

The Challenge

As mentioned above, the was a challenge element to this workshop, therefore, I was also responsible to provide a case study where groups had one day to prepare the dashboard. The case study was on presenting the company’s financial performance from the previous two years.

The groups then had to present their findings and I had the opportunity to evaluate four out of 11 groups that participated. I was impressed by how they were able to put the dashboard together given their limited experience and tight deadline. Bear in mind the students who participated are students from an accounting background. Below were some of the dashboards presented that was to me.
